A female redback spider can produce eggs for up to two years after a single mating.
Spiderlings emerge after about 14 days and disperse on the wind as soon as conditions are right. T
he male is only about one-third the size of the female and is considered harmless to humans because his fangs are so small.
Unlike the Sydney Funnel-web, the Red-back is
not aggressive
and if molested will usually fall to the ground, curl up and fake death. Although venemous and hundreds
of people are bitten by Red-back Spiders every year very few are seriously injured.  Deaths
used to occur before an antivenom became available in 1956
.
The Red Back  is found in all parts of Australia except in the hottest deserts and on the coldest mountains.
It is related to the best known member of the group, the
