APPLICATION RATES FOR PONDS AND LAKES:
Apply Copper Sulfate crystals at a rate of 2-3 lbs. per acre-foot of water. An acre-foot is 43,560 square feet in area x 1 foot deep. Put the crystals in a porous bag and drag it through the water until the crystals dissolve. Use an empty milk jug as a float to keep the bag near the surface. Copper Sulfate can also be applied by just broadcasting over the water and letting it sink. Apply in early spring prior to formation of matted growth. Chemical treatment works best when the water temperature is between 60°F and 80°F and algae clumps are broken up during chemical application. Avoid treating when the water temperature is above 80°F and treat only 1/4 to 1/3 of the vegetation at a time to prevent oxygen depletion and a possible fish kill.
APPLICATION RATES FOR WATER TANKS AND FOUNTAINS:
Add Copper Sulfate at the rate of 1/8 teaspoon per 100 gallons of water to kill existing algae. It should then be mechanically removed. Cover or shade the tanks to help slow algae growth.
Root Control:
Step 1
Measure out about one-half cup of medium sized Copper Sulfate crystals. Pour the crystals into the commode or toilet stool. Flush the toilet.
Step 2
Repeat this procedure 2 or 3 more times. Flush the toilet several more times to make sure the crystals are carried outside of your home and into the sewer line.
Step 3
Observe the flow of your toilet for the next several days. Copper Sulfate does not work overnight. It requires several days to several weeks to kill the roots and it may take even longer for the dead roots to decay and break away, thereby clearing the sewer line and restoring proper flow from your toilet.
Step 4
Repeat the procedure every three to four months using smaller amounts of Copper Sulfate to prevent the roots from growing back.
Tips
Tree roots that come in contact with a Copper Sulfate solution will only absorb the copper for a short distance into the root system, effectively killing the root at the site without damaging the tree or shrub.
Copper Sulfate has also been used in homes with septic systems without harming the bacterial action of the tanks.
Do not pour Copper Sulfate crystals into a sink drain or tub trap. Copper Sulfate will erode the light-weight metal pipes and cause leaks.
