The 21st Century Combination Set containing a Centenary of Federation Floral Emblems Bi-Metal (gold and silver) coin, a Holey Dollar & Dump silver coin set, and a "Gregorian Millennium 'Bi-Metal (gold and silver) coin, all minted and inspected by the Perth Mint. The coins commemerate Australia's Centenary of Federation in 2001 and the start of the third millennium. A century ago,on 1 January 1901, the sixth British colonies in Australia came together in Federation and the Commonwealth of Australia was born.
The Centenary of Federation Floral Emblems Bi-Metal:
(gold and silver) coin, features a 99.99% fine gold, star-shaped centerpiece depicting Australia's Coast of Arms. The seven-pointed star symbolizes each of the six States and the seventh point represents the Territories. The Coat of Arms is superimposed over a wattle blossom, the national floral emblem of Australia. A 99.99% fine silver border around the gold centerpiece portrays Australian floral emblems. The Perth Mint's traditional 'P' mintmark is included in the reverse design, and the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II appears on the obverse with the monetary denomination, .00.
The Holey Dollar & Dump:
Coin set is based on Australia's first legal tender coins, introduced by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1813. As British coins were scarce, he punched out the center of Spanish eight reale coins (known as pieces of eight) to make two coins known as the Holey Dollar & Dump. This Holey Dollar & Dump coin set comprises two pure silver coins which fit together in a unique way. The central 'Dump' coin is star-shaped and features and intricate depiction of Australia's Federal Parliament House, located in Canberra, in the Act. The Perth Mint's traditional 'P' mintmark and the dates 1901-2001 are also incorporated in the design. The Holey Dollar portrays the official badges of each Australian State and the Northern Territory. The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II appears on the obverse of both coins, with monetary denominations of .00 for the Holey Dollar, and 0.25 cents for the Dump. Bother coins were designed by Dr. Stuart Devlin, A.O, C.M.G. and are legal tender under the Australian Currency Regulations Act and are struck from 99.99% fine silver.
The 'Gregorian Millennium' Bi-Metal:
Proof-like coin commemorates the year 2001, the start of the third millennium according to the modern Gregorian calendar. The coin features a 99.99% pure gold border designed as a contemporary watch, to mark the modern method of time keeping. The hands indicate 8.00am in Western Australia, which is 0.00 Greenwich Mean Time when the new millennium officially started. The second hand shows one second to represent the leap seconds that are occasionally added to synchronize today's highly accurate modern atomic time-keeping with the rotation of the Earth. The border features the words 'Gregorian Millennium 2001'. The name comes from Pope George XIII, who reformed the calendar in line with the solar year in 1582.
The central design is made from 99.9% pure silver and features an observatory and night sky highlighted in color. The historic observations of the movements of the stars and planets have led to today's accurate methods of time keeping. The three depictions of the Earth represent the planet's orbit around the Sun, which takes one year. The coin is official coinage and lawful currency of Australia, and features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. Each coin weighs approximately 14.53g. measures 32mm in diameter and has a face value of .
